Philanthropy & Community Service
Tau Lambda Xi values Community. This value of ours works in two-fold. Firstly, it represents the community of love, respect, and sisterhood we wish to maintain amongst our members. Secondly it represents our commitment to community service.
Tau Lambda Xi organizes many fundraisers and community service events throughout the year; these include volunteering for events such as Trick or Eat, community clean ups, or helping organizations with events they are hosting (including but not limited to volunteering at events such as Relay for Life, Light the Night, or baking with Easter Seals). With our fundraisers we support our primary and secondary charities.
Tau Lambda Xi’s fundraisers primarily support Eating Disorders Nova Scotia . This non-profit organization was chosen to be our primary charity of choice as they are strongly tied to our values.
Eating Disorders Nova Scotia is a non-profit organization that offers peer support for individuals suffering from eating disorders, and for their families, friends, and partners. This organization also offers education for caregivers, clinicians, school staff and others, as well as assistance in navigating the mental health system and advocacy for prevention, treatment, and support. All the programs and services provided are free. Eating Disorders NS was chosen as it ties in with our value of Self-Discovery. It is also an organization near and dear to our founding mother, Jessica, as she suffered from Anorexia Nervosa for 5 years and her parents relied heavily on the programs offered for guidance.
Along with our fundraising efforts for Eating Disorders NS, the sisters of Tau Lambda Xi also participate in Eating Disorder Awareness week February 1-7th by hosting a fundraiser during that week, a sisterhood event promoting self-love, creating a social media platform promoting destigmatizing, as well as awareness of, and resources to treat eating disorders. It has become more or less of a tradition each year for the event to be a Zumba fundraiser, to promote healthy activity with our sisters and community.
Secondary charities: Every year, we pick a new charity of choice to support alongside EDNS. Over the yeas we have chosen various charities that relate on a personal level to sisters, and also that follow our values as Tau Lambda Xi. These charities are located all throughout the HRM and do not have a specific theme. Some examples of past charities of choice include the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lime Disease Treatment Fund, Dartmouth Education Center, and the IWK. If you ever have any suggestions for something that you would like our charity of choice to be, feel free to bring it up at chapter meetings. Our second charity is chosen by popular vote every fall.
