Thank you for your interest in the recruitment process at Tau Lambda Xi Sorority. Each semester, our sorority attracts ambitious students with the drive and desire to positively impact the community. We foster relationship-building and provide a unique support system that will open doors for members throughout their futures.

Our recruitment schedule for fall 2023 semester is announced below. For more information check out our Instagram page!

F.A.Q.

What is rush?

Rush is another way of saying recruitment period. This is a period where anyone who meets the requirements can come to events put on by the sorority and meet all the sisters. It is a two week period twice a year (January and September) where you can learn more about Tau Lambda Xi and we can learn more about you! The events include philanthropy fundraisers to fun ice breaker nights. Rush allows you to get more comfortable with Greek life and learn more about what our values are.

The schedule of events each semester is posted to our  Instagram and Facebook pages. You can also use the contact us page for any questions you have!

Who can join?

Tau Lambda Xi requires that you be enrolled in a post secondary school in HRM. We also require a joining member to be female or be comfortable being referred to by female pronouns.

Students over the age of 26 are welcome to join our alumnae chapter so they may better connect from their similar life circumstances (additionally the alumnae chapter has a lower commitment level as well to accommodate for family life, etc).

Why Xi?

Tau Lambda Xi is an accepting and diverse sorority. We pride ourselves on the values of Self-Discovery, Learning, and Community. To uphold these values we offer our members the ability to participate in many character development opportunities ranging from social/formal events to philanthropic and leadership endeavours.

Rush is the chance to get to know everything and anything about our sorority and sisters. Rushing Tau allows you the opportunity to create strong bonds that will last a lifetime. These bonds allow you to meet new people and open doors that you never had thought of. Our sisters help each other in personal growth and development, whether that be through school aid or peer guidance, we always support one another. Rushing allows you to put your foot in the door into resources and forever friendships.

Do I have to attend every event?

No! We ask that you can make as many events as possible (and aim for at least 3/6),  but understand that some weeks are busier than others. If you are unable to attend any event or unable to make 3/6, but want to join, please contact us and we can set up a day that works for both you and some of our sisters to meet for coffee/tea/cocoa.

Do I have to join if I come to events?

No! Although we would love for everyone who rushes to join, we understand that not everyone will be interested in the end. If you have any concerns in who we are, what we do or are hesitant on joining, please reach out to us and we would be happy to have a one-on-one chat and address anything on your mind!

In shows and movies I see hazing as part of sorority life. Does Tau haze?

Never. We define hazing as:

  • Forcing, pressuring, and/or insisting on the consumption of substances
  • Forcing, pressuring, and/or insisting on the participation of pledges or sisters in demeaning or humiliating acts
  • Any forms of harassment or abuse, be it physical, verbal, mental, emotional, cyber, etc.

You will never be asked to do anything we haven’t done or will not do ourselves. Hazing will never be tolerated.

If at any time you feel uncomfortable (whether this be during rush, during pledgeship, or as a sister) please inform a member of our judicial committee who will ensure incidents are properly address (or any trusted sister).

Are other stereotypes true?

Another stereotype about sororities is that they’re all about partying. Tau prides itself on being a dry sorority. When creating the sorority our founders saw that many university/college club events promote drinking amongst their members as a means to have fun (and often only host events that involve drinking!). To create an environment where everyone can feel comfortable, and to encourage the ability to have fun without relying on alcohol, Tau keeps our official events dry.

Of course, individual sisters may partake in their own time and together, but these are not recognized by the sorority as official outings. As an organization we do not tie drinking to our purpose or to official events we host. (Exceptions are our annual awards night gala and Greek ball where drinks are available but not emphasized as the purpose of the evening).

What happens after rush?

After rush, you will be given a bid from the president of Tau Lambda Xi. Bid is a fancy way of saying an invitation to join our sorority and become a pledge. As a pledge, you will go through a 4–5-week program that will teach you all about who we are and what we do, and the logistics of the sorority. Pledge is a time to experience more events with us and see if you can make the time commitment required of a sister before becoming one. Pledgeship can be deferred as necessary if a pledge feels they cannot make the time commitment one semester but should be able to in future semesters.

We understand not everyone accepts their bid but hope you will! 😊
